The name of this red wine Pombal do Vesuvio refers to the Vinha do Pombal. This vineyard, characterized by the existence of an old and traditional Douro dovecote, consists of a set of parcels of high quality Touriga Nacional, planted in 2000 in the heart of the Quinta, in levels of 2 bardos, at an elevation of around 200 meters. The production of these vineyards is an important component of Pombal do Vesuvio 2018, together with Touriga Franca from plots in the Vale da Teja and Vinha das Minas, and a small amount of Tinta Amarela from the Quinta Nova vineyard.
Grape Varieties: 50% Touriga Franca, 45% Touriga Nacional, 5% Tinta Amarela.
Tasting Notes: Aromas of black currant, licorice and blackberry combine with appealing notes of dark chocolate and the characteristic thyme fragrance — Vesuvio's signature. The palate is seductive with a luxurious texture that unveils delicious flavors of black fruits, dark chocolate and a touch of coffee roast. The extraordinary freshness given by the refined acidity provides a remarkable balance to the powerful structure. Compatible with vegetarian and vegan diets.
Vinification: The grapes from the selected portions of Vesuvio are harvested manually into 20 kg boxes. In the cellar, a first manual sorting of bunches is carried out, followed by a gentle destemming. The whole berries are then forwarded to a second sorting stage before being sent, by gravity, to fermentation vats, at the entrance of which they are gently crushed. Fermentations are closely monitored, with temperatures and maceration movements adjusted, in order to obtain the full potential of the grapes. The aim is to produce a balanced wine, with expressive fruit, harmonious in flavor, preserving a good aging potential characteristic of red wines from the Douro.
Ageing: 8 months in French oak barrels of 400 and 225Lts.
Storage and Consumption: It can be consumed since now, but it has very good potential for ageing in bottle, up to 8/9 years.
Winemakers: Charles Symington and Pedro Correia.
