Grapegrowing: The winter of 2015 was cold with considerable rainfall, followed by a warm spring and a mild summer. The wine harvest was slightly early, and the grapes were picked in mid-September, without this harming the health and balance of the grapes.
Grape Varieties: Field Blend from our old vines from Quinta dos Frades Estate with over 23 different varieties such as Touriga Franca, Tinta Amarela, Tinta da Barca, Tinta Carvalha, Tinta Francisca, Tinto Cão, Bastardo, Rufete and Donzelinho.
Age of Vines: +90 Years
Soil: Schist
The Wine: Quinta dos Frades is produced in excellent years only. This wine features velvety black fruit and spicy notes. Full-bodied with rounded tannins. A smooth wine with great balance and a long aftertaste.
Winemaking:: The grapes are picked manually, crush and foot trodden in granite presses. The entire alcoholic fermentation process also takes place in granite presses. The must is then placed in stainless steel vats where the malolactic fermentation occurs. Age in French oak barrels.
Maturation: 12 months in new french oak barrels. Aged in a bottle for 12 months.
Tasting Notes: Appearance: deep black core, with a narrow ruby halo. Aroma: pronounced aroma of concentrated black fruits, with light smoked, toasted and spicy nuances. Mouth: full-bodied, with firm tannins. The palate shows ripe black fruits and notes of smoke, spices and wood roasting. Long and persistent finish.
Serving Suggestions: Serve at 16°C. Accompanies intense regional dishes, game and aged meats. Excellent with roast meats.
