"I would also advise those who plant vines for red wine not to exclude from them a small portion of some white grape variety, (...) because it is a fact, confirmed by winegrowers of great authority, that red wines, resulting from the mixture of red grapes with a small fraction (1/10) of white grapes, are always superior to those that are exclusively supplied by red grapes." Viscount of Villa Maior, 1875, Manual of Practical Viticulture.
